Sabar Workshop with Mike Bennett

Sabar are the drums and drumming style of the Worlorf tribe in Senegal. This is very exciting drumming using one hand and one stick... and 5 different drums... creating a dynamic sound.
Master Percussionist Mike Bennett is a master of sabar drumming of the Worlorf tribe in Gambia and Senegal. He has been a professional percussionist for over thirty-five years and has studied sabar with Mamjam Janha the last six winters in Serrekunda, Gambia, West Africa. Mike is known as one if the most versatile drummers in the state previously playing with Patti Wicks Trio, The Beatroots, Birdhouse, Ruby Gensheimer, Doug Crate and now playing with A-Train, Shane Ellis Quartet and Mike Bennett and the Volvos. Mike is also a faculty member of the College of the Atlantic, a faculty member of Schoodic Arts For All and former faculty SFOA. He was co-producer of the compilation compact disc, GAMBIA... FOR THE PEOPLE with Zach Soares which received critical acclaim in Modern Drummer magazine. Mike produced, narrated, and did the camera work for his documentary movie GAMBIA N'KARAMOO, a video about his teachers and friends in Serrekunda,Gambia. He taught four years at the Northern Conservatory in Bangor and now teaches at COA and privately in his studio in Southwest Harbor, Maine.
